I love season 1 Arnold.  I do not like what Arnold becomes after that season much at all, though..
A really cool versatile laidback active character with a range of emotions and possibilities (is never a completely good person; sometimes he breaks into theaters or falls into bad crowds or pulls Little Rascals shenanigans) somehow became a cardboard voice of morals who is almost incapable of holding a story on his own if it’s not about how he helps a 5x more interesting side character.  Fortunately, nearly every other character in the show is extremely interesting and well-developed, so the MAIN CHARACTER’S changes are not too much of a distraction, oddly enough.
There are a few exceptions to this in later seasons (I kinda feel like the point of ‘April Fools Day’ was to put Arnold back into a situation where he could be bad like season 1 before the show ends), but it always just feels like “thank god, he’s feeling season 1 in this episode” rather than “this is a well-rounded character.”

I AGREE…First season Arnold is totally awesome and I love his narrow head!! It was so stylized, not that the later seasons were either. Craig told me during a personal conversation that they rounded out the characters a whole lot, particularly Arnold’s head shape. He wanted to make him “easier on the eyes.” and “less ugly.” But I think season 1 Arnold has to be my favorite model!  Edit: This is me being lame and not really giving an indepth view of the original message. It’s really late and I’m pretty tired. So sorry!!!

Idgaf I still love him. Bad ass or not arnold is my home skills

Same, Any kind of Arnold is great in my eyes. I agree with a lot of what the OP says in terms of his personality!

As far as Arnold’s character, it certainly developed over time. It was experimental, but in a way also an accident. The show started to become a very emotional one, more emotional than any of the producers or Craig intended it to be. Later on, the show still has it’s formula in tact but a little bit different at the same time. Particularly during and after April Fools Day. Arnold, after Season one estimated at around the third, he started becoming more of this zen boy because Craig wanted him to emit that kind of…peace maker character out of him. There’s just all this chaos that could potentially ruin everybody’s day and his own but with Arnold you just kind of get this feeling of reassurance. That everything could be okay for this little guy and his friends. Craig described his character to be supernatural and that you would just want to be Arnold’s friend when you’re around him (This was totally successful, in my opinion anyway.) and all in all the show was just beautifully crafted! As a viewer, you get that fun side from the quirky humor and cartoon reasoning. You have really beautiful characters with equally beautiful artwork, and as a kid you’re really digging that! Tt the same time, you can without even knowing that you’re watching your problems on screen! Then it’s suddenly like…whoa…As you get older, this cartoon truly becomes richer because you start to think of more possibilities-this show is just that diverse! Craig might have not intended for it to have turned out into a very emotional cartoon, but as he said, he wouldn’t make it any differently if he had the opportunity to remake it.Sorry for the TL;DR.
